    1. One of the early customers who confirmed their key was used found out because google/anthropic/openai revoked it and contacted them saying it was being used for distillation. All of these companies have detection systems so they can cut it off quickly. which is why the black market for tokens exists in first place. We shared that detail because customers were already getting emails about distillation

So, of course, I had to ask Dax, like, Hey, how do you know this was a distillation attack?
  2. dax@thdxr

yes that was a bit frustrating mid incident when trying to investigate. they did quite a bit and then started refusing

Are you getting blocked by cyber safeguards at all with frontier models?

I think the main thing here is we're in a whole new world. These attacks are extremely automated, run in parallel, attack every single possible thing that you have vulnerable, jump from one hole to the next. It's basically impossible to address using humans. At this point, we have agents that are constantly running 24-7, ingesting every single signal, trying to spot attacks early.

Now, I got kind of curious about this whole thing, so I said, OK, hey, Dax, talk me through, what was the hack like?

    2. Yes it is expensive and it's not something every company can afford. We're running it constantly and this is probably at minimum several thousand a day. but given our newly found high profile status this is still the cost of doing business nowadays

And of course, that made me kind of think, well, wait a second, running something like Daybreak Blue, like 24 -7, I mean, this has to be kind of expensive, right?
